AC Milan hoping to sign Belgian international

AC Milan are to renew their long standing interest in prising Axel Witsel away from Zenit St. Petersburg.

The Rossoneri spent much of last summer trying to secure a deal for the midfielder, offering a deal worth a reported €25 million on deadline day but it was rejected by the Russian club.

“It’s clear I want to have another challenge at a higher level than in Russia,” Witsel told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It doesn’t matter where but it’s true that I like Italy.”

It has been suggested Milan president Silvio Berlusconi will open his cheque book and bid €30 million for the Belgian international but this will only occur if his side win their first two games of 2016 against Bologna and Roma.

Another alternative to Witsel is Roberto Soriano who could be torn away from Sampdoria with the combative midfielder having a €15 million buy-out clause in his current contract.

The Rossoneri are also monitoring Ever Banega whose contract at Sevilla expires at the end of the season.
