AC Milan set to make contract decisions over defensive trio

Published on: 07 February 2016

AC Milan have reportedly made decisions over the futures of defenders Philippe Mexes, Alex and Cristian Zapata, with Alex the most likely to stay next season.

The contracts of all three centre-backs are set to expire at the end of the season and with all three either over 30-years-old or 29 in Zapata’s case, the Rossoneri may want to replace them with younger recruits.

According to Tuttosport, due to the form of Alex this season, the 33-year-old may be offered a contract extension and asked to act as a tutor to his defensive partner Alessio Romagnoli.

However, both Mexes and Zapata are likely to be let go at the end of the season, in a bid to remove their lucrative salaries from the wage bill.

Since joining the Rossoneri in the summer of 2014, the Brazilian has made 35 Serie A appearances for the club, scoring three times.
