AFC President hails Korea Republic's history-making feat in Poland

Kuala Lumpur: Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President, has praised Korea Republic for reaching their first-ever FIFA men’s final after they secured their spot in the final of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019 following their clinical 1-0 victory against Ecuador on Tuesday.

The Taeguk Warriors have shown fantastic resolve in the competition, having come from behind twice in the quarter-finals to beat Senegal 3-2 on penalties after the pulsating match ended 3-3 in extra time.

They continued their fine form in the semi-finals against their South American opponents to set-up an exciting encounter against Ukraine in the final.

The AFC President was full of praise for the young Korean Republic stars: “Congratulations to Korea Republic on reaching the final in the FIFA U-20 World Cup - a first for their country. Their achievements so far have been remarkable, and I hope they carry on this form and go on to win the competition."


“Korea Republic have displayed talent, skill and maturity beyond their young age which have earned many admirers. I wish them good luck when they face Ukraine in the final. I am sure they will play with honour and pride knowing that Asia is fully behind them.

“It is satisfying to witness Korea Republic’s impact in the competition which clearly reflects the growing standard of the sport in Asia. The AFC, in its Vision and Mission, has placed great importance on improving the performances of our teams on the global stage.’

On their way to the final, Korea Republic defeated South Africa and six-time winners Argentina in the group stage before going on to defeat Japan, Senegal and Ecuador in the knockouts, setting up what promises to be a thrilling final against Ukraine on Saturday at the Lodz Stadium at 6:00pm (local time).
