AFC President praises greatest-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup

Published on: 09 July 2019

Kuala Lumpur: On behalf of the Asian football family, I would like to congratulate FIFA on staging of the greatest-ever Women’s World Cup which concluded in Lyon on Sunday.

We also send our gratitude to the French Football Federation (FFF) for their outstanding hosting of a tournament which has taken women’s football to another level. They deserve all the plaudits they have received.

And, of course, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) sends its congratulations to the United States on their second successive success in the FIFA Women’s World Cup – with their deserved 2-0 victory against the Netherlands in the final.

Three Asian teams reached the Round of 16 – Australia, China PR and Japan – but, despite spirited and impressive performances, were unable to progress any further while Korea Republic and Thailand left the competition in the group stages.

But there is no doubt about Asia’s commitment to the women’s game and already the Continent has three confirmed bids from Australia, Japan and Korea Republic to stage the next FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

And next year India will play host to the FIFA Women’s Under-17 World Cup and, of course, there will be a chance for the Asian women’s teams to shine at the Tokyo Olympic Games football tournament.

Again, we thank FIFA, the FFF and all those who delivered and attended the tournament for an event which will long live in people’s memories.
