Afcon 2019: Hotel collapses in Garoua amidst Ambazonian war in Anglophone region

Published on: 13 September 2018

While the Cameroonian government has set the end of September 2018 as the deadline for the delivery of the four-star hotel and three other high standing to house the delegations of the CAN 2019 in Garoua, the form work that was prepared for the casting of the slab of the building, gave way to Plateau district and caused several serious injuries.

While Prime Primotac pretends to deny, the Portuguese company Mota Engil designated for the construction of this hotel with 70 rooms confirms this incident and involves the rain.

“The formwork intended to receive a segment of the slab of the first floor of the hotel under construction collapsed shortly before the pouring of the concrete (…).

This incident unfortunately delayed a few days the pouring of concrete on this surface of 35m ² located on the left wing of the building, between two beams,

A very bad news when we know that after its final inspection mission on August 6 on various sites, the CAF could make the decision to withdraw CAN in Cameroon at its general assembly held in Egypt on the 26th of this year. September.

The statement said that the construction of the four-star hotel is still on the first floor, which means it is experiencing a huge delay. Not to mention that the four training stages, roads and other infrastructure listed in the specifications are far from over. On July 3, 2018, Prime Primotac workers engaged in a strike to claim the payment of four months of salary arrears for some, and six months for others. In addition, subcontractors demanded 3 billion CFA francs for their outstanding bills.

“We will achieve in 10 months a job that normally should have been done in 3 years,” said Hamadou Moussa, director of Prime Primotac, on the eve of the CAF inspection mission in early August 2018. Jostled by the bad weather and the timing, the technicians work day and night, in a hasty sprinkling curling the messy diy in the eyes.

CAF President Ahmad Ahmad, with his eyes fixed on everything that is happening in Cameroon, had already declared after the inspection mission: “If you asked me, Cameroon would be the best country to welcome the CAN because of its football history. But, there are still questions about their willingness to organize a successful tournament (…) It would be dangerous to take risks by playing African players, especially professionals who practice their profession in Europe and other continents “.

President Ahmadou Ahidjo took only 11 months to build the stadiums to organize the CAN in 1972. The Garoua stadium with a capacity of 30 000 places had become the first of the continent to acquire artificial turf, well before La France. In 36 years of power, and despite the astronomical amounts paid to Cameroon by FIFA for the participation of Indomitable Lions at the World Cup, Paul Biya is unable to organize a single CAN.

It was in 2007 that the construction of the Omnisports Paul Biya stadium was announced. But the first stone was laid in 2009. 11 years later, this stadium is still not ready. Now it takes a miracle for him to realize in two months what he has not been able to do in 36 years. As Ahmad Ahmad said: “There are many things that are still missing,
