Ajax chief insists Dutch club tried to persuade Manchester United-bound manager Erik ten Hag to stay

Ajax technical director Gerry Hamstra has insisted the club 'tried everything' they could to try and keep Manchester United-bound manager Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag has verbally agreed to become the next permanent boss at Old Trafford and his appointment could be confirmed in the coming days.

The 52-year-old has refused to discuss his links to United publicly and has stressed his focus remains on winning both the Eredivisie title and the Dutch Cup.

Hamstra claims Ajax attempted to keep Ten Hag and 'recently' offered the Dutchman a new deal to remain in Amsterdam.

'I can be very clear about this, we did,' Hamstra said. 'We did everything to. We are trying everything to keep him.'
