Alan Shearer sends message to Man City star Erling Haaland over his Premier League record

Alan Shearer believes that if Erling Haaland can stay fit, he will break his own record of netting 34 goals in a single Premier League campaign.

The former Newcastle and Blackburn striker shares the feat with ex-Manchester United hero Andy Cole, who hit the figure while playing for the Magpies. Both men achieved the record when the Premier League contained 22 teams.

Mo Salah holds the title for the most goals scored during a 38-game campaign, firing home 32 in his debut season during 2017/18. Haaland has already found the net 14 times in eight league matches for Manchester City.

He is the firm favourite for the golden boot, the odds being slashed further following his hat-trick against United in Sunday’s 6-3 derby win. In doing so, the Norwegian became the first Premier League player to score back-to-back hat-tricks in three successive home matches.

Phil Foden also found the net three times in the rout to record his first career treble. It was no surprise to see both players included in Shearer’s Premier League team of the week.

The Match of the Day pundit backs Haaland to break his single-season goals record - if he can stay off the injury table. The 22-year-old has suffered a handful of injuries during his career, including knee and hip issues, and started the season not fully fit after a small surgery in the summer.

Commenting on Haaland’s inclusion in the team of the week, Shearer inferred that only injury will stop him breaking the record. He said: "Another three goals.

“My record of 34 goals in a season is under serious threat. If he stays fit, he's breaking it!" On Foden, he added: "A sensational hat-trick from this very, very talented young man."
