Alcoyano's miracle: Built on a budget of just 700,000 euros

Published on: 21 January 2021

The Copa del Rey has seen another miracle this season. This time, it has come in Alcoy, one of the hardest hit areas by the coronavirus in the Valencian Community.

On Wednesday evening, Segunda B side Alcoyano, with ten men, eliminated Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey to reach the quarter finals on a budget of 700,000 euros.

A goal from Juanan in extra time, with them already reduced to ten men, unleashed euphoria around the town, despite the ongoing pandemic meaning that fans were unable to attend.

One of the brightest players on the night was Jose Juan, and at 41 years of age the goalkeeper was almost unbeatable, putting in the performance of a lifetime. Denying Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Asensio and others, it was a night that he won't forget anytime soon.

Real Madrid finished the night with Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, Toni Kroos, Asensio, Casemiro, and other big stars on the pitch, but it wasn't enough to overcome Alcoyano.

The songs being sung in the dressing room afterwards could be heard even outside of the stadium, and Wednesday, January 20, 2021 is a night the club will never forget.
