Alderweireld open to Ajax return

Published on: 23 October 2018

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has indicated that he would welcome the opportunity to return to Ajax in the future.

The 29-year-old Belgium international, who has been linked with a transfer to Manchester United in the past, has been a regular in the Spurs side this season and is se to feature in Wednesday's Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven.

Alderweireld is 14/1 to score at any time against the Dutch side in a match Spurs are 1/1 to win. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's team are 9/4 to keep a clean sheet against PSV and 7/2 to qualify for the last 16 of the competition.

Alderweireld left Ajax for Atletico Madrid in 2013 and spent the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Southampton before joining Spurs for £11.5million in the summer of 2015. He has featured in 90 Premier League matches for Spurs.

Alderweireld said of a possible return to Ajax: "At this moment in my career I don't think about that yet. I think I can go on for years at this level. If I ever did, it is not to take it easy.

"I do not want to be 36-years-old and can hardly walk. When I return, I certainly want to leave something. And not only in the dressing room.

"Of course it is close to home in Belgium and I have a bond with the club, because I played football at Ajax for eight years, achieving championships."
