Allegri could have been Real Madrid coach in May: Everything was done

Published on: 12 January 2022

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was a signature away from becoming Real Madrid's head coach last summer, his agent has revealed.

Real Madrid were seeking a replacement for Zinedine Zidane last May after the Frenchman decided to step down, following Los Blancos' close title fight with Atletico Madrid in LaLiga Santander and their semi-final exit in the Champions League.

"Allegri was one step away from being appointed as Real Madrid's new coach in May. Everything was done," the Italian's agent, Giovanni Branchini, told Sky Sport Italia.

"The deal was done. He just had to sign the contract. Then he opted to sign for Juventus."

Real Madrid eventually appointed another Italian in Carlo Ancelotti, whilst Allegri himself returned to the Bianconeri in July 2021.

"I have to thank Real Madrid and the president [Florentino Perez] for the opportunity he gave me," said Allegri. "Then I reflected and chose Juventus."

Allegri's Juventus will play Inter in the final of the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday night at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.
