Amamoo wants local coach for the Black Stars

Ghana goalkeeper William Amamoo wants a local coach to lead the Black Stars as permanent replacement is being considered.

The Israel-based shot-stopper says a local coach will excel in charge of the Black Stars if he is given the same support as foreign coaches.

Amamoo, who plays for Hapoel Petach Tikva, says the Ghana Football Association must give the job to a Ghanaian as local coaches are capable of excelling. “I am confident we have competent people who can also do a good job,” the 25-year-old told Goal.com.

“We need to believe in our own people. When we support them like we do for foreign coaches they will achieve the same or better results. Until we give them the chance, we’ll never know what they’ve got to offer.”

Despite vouching for the competence of local coaches, Amamoo insists he will support any coach chosen by the Ghana FA.

“The Ghana FA knows what is best and I’ll respect their final decision. Whatever choice they make it should be someone who has been tried and tested. Ghana have set certain standards and we need a coach that will take over from there.

“If I had my way I would suggest the assistant coach Kwasi Appiah should be promoted and provided with all the support we gave to Rajevac.

“Appiah has under-studied his boss and with the experience gained and rapport between him and the players it is possible he can continue from where his boss left off. I would advise him to also apply for the post.”

Over fifty coaches, some world class like ex-Sevilla and Tottenham boss Juande Ramos have expressed interest in coaching the Black Stars.

Milovan Rajevac took the inexperienced squad to the final of the African Cup of Nations in January.

Six months later he led the squad to the quarter final of the World Cup in South Africa yet some officials in government were not keen on the extension of his contract.

He refused to renew his contract after delays from the Ghana government over approving his new salary and he opted for an offer from Saudi side Al Ahly.
