Former Hearts of Oak great Yaw Amankwah-Mireku shared his most profound moment during his playing days under the tutelage of Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio.

The former Ghana international and coach is being honoured with a charity match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.

The game will see the Black Stars coached by Maxwell Konadu line up against Friends of Attuquayefio which will be predominantly composed of the members of the famous Hearts of Oak squad in the late 90’s and early 2000’s which will have veteran Sam Arday as its coach on the day.

And Mireku who was very key to Attuquayefio’s plans during his most successful time as a coach with Hearts paid a glowing tribute to the legend by recounting his most memorable moment with ‘Sir Jones’.

“It was during one of our games when he told me Amankwa, if you don’t know and you cross this center line I will take you off,” the most captain in the history of Hearts of Oak recalled with nostalgia.

“I used to overlap a lot as a defender but on that day Sir Jones told me never to cross the center line which I really didn’t like.

“You know with Sir Jones, his American accent comes when he is most angry so he told me not to cross the center line.

“But I decided to join the attack and gave an assist for a goal.

“So after the game he came to me and said: ‘didn’t I tell you not to cross the center line?’ and I responded: ‘but coach at least I was able to give a pass for a goal.’

“And he said: “ok, but if you disobey me again I will take you out.”

Proceeds of the charity game which will kickoff at 5pm on Friday will be donated to the Ear, Nose and Throat Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
