ANCELOTTI: "DESERVED WIN DESPITE LAPSE IN FOCUS"

Published on: 18 March 2019

Carlo Ancelotti insisted his team deserved the three points as they beat Udinese 4-2 at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday night, despite letting a two-goal lead slip in the first half.

“We had a lapse in concentration, but we deserved the win. I’m angry that we had to play and travel on Thursday and then we weren’t able to be at our best today. The same thing happened against Sassuolo. We’re feeling the effects of the tiredness a bit and we lacked a bit of organisation today.”

Ancelotti praised Udinese for their reaction in pulling the scores back to 2-2 at half time: “Udinese are in good form. They fight and they caused us problems. They did well to get at us after we went 2-0 up, but then in the second half we collected ourselves and in the end I think we deserved to win based on how we performed.”

The coach was full of praise for Dries Mertens after the Belgian rediscovered his scoring form in the win: “I’m always happy with Dries. He plays for the team, provides assists and does what we ask of him. We’re even happier because he scored.”

Ancelotti brushed off suggestions that his side are already focusing on the Europa League: “No, I think that the league is important for those that want to play in Europe,” he said. “We have a fascinating clash against Arsenal and all the players will want to play in that. That motivation needs to show in the league so that we’re ready for Europe.”

Ancelotti also gave an update on the condition of David Ospina, who was involved in a nasty collision during the game: “He’s fine,” he said. “He’s aware and conscious. He’ll stay in for observation, but we’re not worried.”
