Ancelotti: If I asked James to run up and down for 90 minutes, he wouldn't do it

Carlo Ancelotti's understanding of James Rodriguez has allowed him and Everton to enjoy the Colombian's best football this season.

James has impressed since arriving on Merseyside from Real Madrid in the summer and since being reunited with Ancelotti, having worked with the coach at both Los Blancos and Bayern Munich in the past.

Ancelotti's relationship with James has allowed him to use him where he most likes to play, and he has reaped the rewards so far this term.

"James wanted to play," Ancelotti told the Men in Blazers podcast. "He was desperate to play, to find a club that believed in him and a coach who trusted him."

"He's not a physical player. He's technical and talented and you have to use him for his qualities.

"If I asked him to run up and down for 90 minutes, he wouldn't do it. But if I ask him to have good use of the ball, to make good passes and to score goals, then he'll do that."

Zinedine Zidane, Niko Kovac and Rafael Benitez have all struggled to get the best out of the player in the past.

James has rediscovered his best form with Everton, putting the days of lacking trust with his coach firmly in the past.
