Sloppy Swansea City defending has proved costly in recent weeks — but there are also problems at the other end of the pitch.

Olivier Giroud was lost for Arsenal's opener nine days ago, while Jonny Howson was able to scramble in from close range last weekend as Swansea were pulled apart at a corner.

But perhaps more concerning was the toothless attacking display.

After a run of six games without a win, without a clean sheet in that sequence, Norwich opted to shore things up when Garry Monk's men visited.

And Swansea had no answer to this rigid defensive approach.

Time and again the ball was moved sideways, slowly, as the visitors laboured to find a way through the massed ranks of yellow and green shirts in front of them.

It was a task that proved beyond them.

Swansea did not manage a single shot on target all game and carved out precious few other chances.

Gylfi Sigurdsson hit the bar with a chipped effort that looked accidental, while Ki Sung-Yueng and Kyle Naughton fired off target from distance.

That was as good as it got.

Bafetimbi Gomis headed wide and lashed high into the stand on the two occasions he had the remotest sight of goal.

And it is the form of Swansea's main goalscorer that is possibly the biggest concern at the moment.

Gomis has now gone nine games without a goal after a flying start to the season that saw him net four in four.

But it is the fact the striker no longer seems to be getting chances that is arguably more of a worry.

Jefferson Montero has been off colour in recent matches, failing to supply the type of lofted crosses on which the Frenchman — and Andre Ayew — thrive.

Earlier in the campaign it was remarked upon almost with a smile that Gomis and Ayew were the only Swansea players scoring.

And it remains the case that the pair have supplied nine of Swansea's 12 Premier League goals so far this season.

Gylfi Sigurdsson has scored two of the others, while Spurs striker Harry Kane put through his own net in South Wales last month.

There was an obvious danger of overreliance on two players to consistently hit the target.

Though Ayew registered the winner at Villa and Swansea's first when Mauricio Pochettino's side were in town, Gomis hasn't scored for two months.

And other players have not come to the party.

Sigurdsson's free-kick sparked a comeback in the Midlands, while his other goal was a late consolation penalty at Southampton.

The likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-Yueng and Jefferson Montero are all still waiting to move off the scoring mark this season.

Gomis went through a barren patch last season, scoring just twice in 25 Premier League appearances before netting nine in 10 games.

Maybe he will soon embark on another scoring streak.

Until then, others need to step up to the plate.
