Ghana’s influential midfielder Andre Dede Ayew has backed Marcel Desailly to become the new coach of the Black Stars but insists he will back any coach who is chosen.

Desailly told the French press on Saturday that he is close to reaching an agreement to lead the Black Stars possibly to the next World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

The ex-France captain is among the several coaches who have expressed interest in the job as the Ghana Football Association considers it options.

Ayew is aware that there are other formidable candidates who are keen on the post.

“I do not know if Marcel Desailly will get this job because there are many contenders, but I talked to people and I know his name is mentioned,” Ayew, whose father played with Desailly at Marseille in the 1990s, said.

“He is someone who is very experienced, he knows many football players, I think he can bring a lot in Ghana.

“He will have my full support if it is him who is chosen to coach the team and anyway I will support any coach who is chosen to lead my country. This is my country and my pride.

“I don’t how things will go but I can tell you that in Ghana things go very fast.”

Asked if Desailly is a popular figure in the country, Ayew mirrored the division over the ex-France captain’s proposed appointment saying: “Yes and no.

“Some are proud of his career but others regret he never played for Ghana but he has more supporters than critics,” Ayew added.
