Ankle woe for Loftus-Cheek

Published on: 16 May 2019

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek could miss the Europa League final after suffering an ankle injury in a friendly game against New England Revolution.

Maurizio Sarri's team, who are 4/6 to beat Arsenal in in the Europa League final in Baku on 29th May and lift the trophy, secured a 3-0 win against New England but the triumph came at a cost.

England midfielder Loftus-Cheek was seen on crutches after the match which was part of the Blues' Say No To Antisemitism campaign.

Sarri fielded a strong starting 11 at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough and Chelsea, who drew their final Premier League game of the season against Leicester City on Sunday, eased to victory thanks to two goals by Ross Barkley and one by Olivier Giroud.

Loftus-Cheek, who came on for the second half as a substitute for Mateo Kovacic, sustained his injury just past the hour mark with Conor Gallagher replacing him.

Prior to the match, Sarri had admitted he was concerned about the trip, saying: "We go there for a good reason I think, so as a man I am very happy to go there.

"As a coach, of course, I am a little bit worried because I know very well that the team now needs rest. So it is not the best way to prepare for the final, I think."

Chelsea can be backed at 201/ to win the Premier League title in 2019/20 and at 11/10 to finish in the top four.
