Ansu Fati & Pedri in line for new Barcelona contracts

Published on: 02 September 2021

Barcelona are thought to have made contact with teenage prodigies Ansu Fati and Pedri to let the pair know they are each in line for a new contract at Camp Nou.

The Catalan giants have had a devastating summer which has seen Lionel Messi leave the club for Paris Saint-Germain as severe financial limitations made registering a new contract impossible. But Fati and Pedri, both still just 18, at least represent a brighter future.

Mundo Deportivo writes that Barça has communicated to each player that there is interest from the club in discussing contract renewals. Plans to begin negotiations are expected to be accelerated as the Catalans attempt to secure the long-term futures of two of Europe’s brightest talents.

Fati has been assigned Barça’s iconic number 10 shirt this week as the club hopes to begin moving on from Messi. But the forward’s own future is not concrete beyond this season.

Fati’s current contract is due to expire next summer. It does include the option of an additional two years, but MD notes that his representatives refute the validity because the player signed that deal in 2019 when he was only 16 and still a minor. Things are potentially different now he is 18.

The youngster is yet to play this season because of a long-term knee injury suffered last November that required surgery, but he has finally returned to training and could be available for the first time in 10 months after the September international break.

Pedri’s current contract is similar, expiring in 2022 with the option of two further years exercisable by the club. The issue for him is that his existing terms, signed when he arrived from Las Palmas last summer, don’t reflect his status as an important starter who played 52 games last season and starred for the national team at both Euro 2020 and the Olympics over the summer.
