Antic's five historic discoveries at Real Madrid, Barcelona & Atletico

Published on: 07 April 2020

Radomir Antic played an important role at Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

The former coach left his mark on each, introducing a style and a way of understanding football that lasted beyond his titles.

Now, each of Spain's big three remember him fondly and we've looked back at five of his greatest discoveries.

Pantic's invention

Milinko Pantic was his great discovery at Atletico Madrid after arriving in 1995.

The club spent 75 million pesetas - around 450,000 euros - for the player who went on to be key in their double winning team.

Pantic allowed Antic to exploit corners and set pieces.

Molina the líbero

Another great find he made at Atletico was that of Molina as libero.

The goalkeeper took advantage of his good feet and gave his players time to breathe in a way that very few goalkeepers had before.

The best Caminero

Jose Luis Perez Caminero was into his third season at Atleti when Radomir arrived.

He shone at the 1994 World Cup in the United States, but his best times came under Antic.

He played 37 times in the double winning season, scoring nine goals. In 1996/97 he played 30 games and scored 14.

Fernando Hierro the goalscorer

Antic left a mark at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu as well.

In the 1991/91 season, Fernando Hierro bagged 21 goals.

But Antic was dismissed by Los Blancos despite having the club as LaLiga leaders.

Pushing Xavi forward at Barcelona

In 2003 Antic went to Barcelona and made Xavi Hernandez one of his most used players.

Additionally, he moved the midfielder forward and into a position that he established himself as one of the best in the world.

The player himself admitted that Antic was one of the first coaches to give him importance.

"He asked me to be more important and to play the last pass," Xavi recalled.
