Appiah impresses for Cesena; Amoah scores

Retired Ghana captain Stephen Appiah proved he is far from over with an impressive display for Serie A new-boys Cesena in their barren draw at Roma and striker Mathew Amoah continued his goalscoring form in the Dutch League.

In England:

Luke Varney's 71st minute drive came off Ghana defender John Pantsil to put Blackpool on level terms in a game that Fulham fought hard to hold on to their unbeaten run in three games.

However, it was Dickson Etuhu who gave the Cottagers a point late in the game after leveling the scores to end the game 2-2.

Michael Essien helped Chelsea to maintain their impressive in the EPL as they brushed aside Stoke City 2-0.

Essien paved way for newly acquired Brazilian midfielder Ramires on the 85th minute.

Winger Lloyd Sam who is knocking at the doors of the Black Stars lasted for an hour for Leeds United who stretched their unbeaten run to three games following a 1-0 win at Watford.

There was fulltime action for Albert Adomah whose Bristol City suffered a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Ipswich Town in the Npower Championship.

Italy:

Stephen Appiah who has retired from international football played 73 minutes in Cesena’s 0-0 draw with AS Roma at the Olimpic Stadium.

The former Black Stars captain was replaced by Luigi Piangerelli.

Udinese endured a disappointing start to this season’s Seria A campaign with Genoa shocking them 0-1 at the Fruili.

Black Stars midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah played the full 90 minutes for Udinese while compatriot Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu sat on the bench.

But last season’s revelation for Genoa Richmond Boakye Yiadom did not make the trip.

Dominic Adiyiah was a 77th minute substitute for Reggina in the Serie B as they lost narrowly at away to Siena.

Germany

Hans Adu-Sarpei’s debut for Schalke 04 came with no joy as the Royal Blues suffered a 1-2 home defeat to Hannover 96.

Sarpei was booked on the 72nd minute mark.

Isaac Vorsah scored his first Bundesliga goal in 44 matches as TSG Hoffenheim recorded their second straight win.

Vorsah stretched to connect a corner from the right side with three minutes left for play.

Striker Prince Tagoe came on as a sub for Demba Ba on the hour mark.

Charles Takyi, nursing an injury, was out while Davidson Drobo-Ampem did not gain selection for St. Pauli

Isaac Boakye watched the game from the stands as Nurnberg succumbed to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of new boys Freiburg.

Netherlands:

Striker Mathew Amoah took his goal tally to four in four Eredivisie matches.

Amoah opened the scoring with a fine finish on the eleventh minute.

Breda went ahead to score again to make it 2-0 over VV Venlo at home.

Eric Addo was suspended for Roda JC who cruised to a 4-2 comfortable win over Heracles Almelo.

Kwame Quansah’s cross was connected home in 74th minute for Heracles.

Spain

Quincy Owusu-Abeyie’s dazzling skills and breath-taking touches were not enough for Malaga as they suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Valencia in their La Liga opener.

Wakaso Mubarak helped Elche FC to a 1-0 home win over Recreativo Huelva in the Segunda division.

France:

Asamoah Gyan played 73 minutes as Stade Rennes continued their unbeaten run with a narrow win over bottom club Arles Avignon at away.

The Sunderland pursuit was replaced by Ismael Bangoura in that 1-0 win.

Belgium:

Abdul Yakeen Iddi played 33 minutes for KV Mechelen who shared the spoils at home with mid-table club St. Truiden.

Right-back Daniel Opare lasted the entire duration for Standard Liege who recovered from last week’s defeat at St. Truiden to beat fourth placed KV Kortrijk 1-0.

Egypt:

Ernest Papa Arko grabbed a brace in Telat El Geish’s 2-1home victory over Wadi Degla FC in the Egyptian Premier League.

Former Hearts of Oak striker Samuel Afum played 90 minutes for winless FC Smouha which drew 0-0 with ENPPI.

Israel:

Former Under-20 defender Daniel Addo was part of the Hapoel Petah Tikva team that drew 2-2 with Hapoel Akko.

William Amamoo was benched for Hapoel Petah Tikva.

Hapoel Ashkelon featured three Ghanaian players: Stephen Ahorlu, Eric Nyarko and Eric Gawu in their humiliating 5-1 defeat to Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Others:

Yaw Antwi was in fine shape for Vojvodina as the brushed aside Habitfarm Javor 2-0 in the Serbian Superliga.

Black Stars returnee Bernard Yao Kumordzi played full throttle for Panionios in their 0-1 home defeat by new entrants Olympiacos Volou in the Greek Super League.

Samuel Inkoom was impressive for FC Basel as they cemented a 4-1 home win over Neuchatel Xamax in the Swiss Super League.
