Zakaria tells Gladbach he wants to go

Highly rated Switzerland midfielder Denis Zakaria has told Borussia Monchengladbach that he wants to leave the club this summer.

The 24-year-old featured for Switzerland at this summer’s Euros but was mainly a substitute with Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka the main protagonist in midfield.

Having suffered a big injury, he missed most of the start of the 2020/21 season but came back to feature heavily towards the second half of the campaign.

He now however wishes to seek a new challenge.

The club’s sporting director Max Eberl said, ‘Denis has made it clear to us that he want to make a change this summer.’

Who could sign Zakaria?

An obvious candidate would be Arsenal. With Xhaka reportedly leaving the club this summer to Roma, his Switzerland replacement makes much sense.

The Gunners are looking for a reasonably priced player and Zakaria could be available for a lesser fee now making his intentions known to the club.

However, considering Xhaka keeps Zakaria out of the national side, would it be wise for the Gunners to bring in a player not yet considered at the same level as his compatriot?

Manchester City have also been previously linked with a move for Zakaria and faced the Swiss midfielder in the Champions League last season.

With Rodri, Gundogan and Fernandinho at the club, Pep Guardiola is well stocked but could see Zakaria as a long-term replacement for the experienced Brazilian.

Any move will need to be done so that Gladbach can find a replacement as they enter the new season with much change after losing highly rated coach Marco Rose to Borussia Dortmund.
