Arsenal great Wright: There is an enormous lack of respect towards Man Utd and England captain Rooney

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has stated that England captain Wayne Rooney deserves a lot more respect.

Rooney has not been in the best of form this season and with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Jamie Vardy bursting onto the scene for the England national team, there have been widespread calls for the current Three Lions captain to be dropped from the squad for the upcoming European Championships.

Wright has been left angered by such a show of disrespect towards Rooney and has insisted that England's all-time leading goalscorer should be one of the first names on the team sheet for Roy Hodgson.

Wright wrote in his column for The Sun: "All those claiming Wayne has had his day, that not only shows a total lack of respect but a lack of understanding, too.

"People seem to think he'll have watched the win in Berlin and been thinking: 'Oh no, they are playing well without me, how am I going to get back in?'

"Well, he won't. He will have been as delighted as the rest of us — and keener than ever to work with them. This is England's all-time leading goalscorer, but even that gets ridiculed by some because certain opponents haven't been out of the top drawer.

"Well, if it were that easy, how come Wayne is the first to break the half-century? Rooney has never shied away from a challenge and he isn't about to start now.

"He'll know there will be those just waiting to pounce on the slightest thing he says tonight: critics and amateur psychologists analysing his body language, claiming he was giving off the wrong signals.

"Well, personally, I can't wait to sit alongside him and discuss all things England with him. But not nearly as much as I can't wait to see him in an England shirt again."
