Arsenal delays leave Marseille winger Ayew shattered

Arsenal reportedly made a formal approach for Ghana's Andre Ayew as the club tried desperately to sign midfield reinforcements prior to the transfer deadline.

According to Mercato365.com.fr, the Gunners made their interest in the Marseille talisman known on 12 August and returned with an official bid three days later.

Arsenal, however, moved too slowly, with Ayew's €13 million buyout clause having expired by August 15 and, thus, missed the opportunity to sign the Ghana international for a relatively low fee.

The 21-year-old is alleged to have been devastated after he was unable to complete a dream move to Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger finally bolstered his midfield ranks on the last day of the transfer window, with Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun joining the club from Everton and Chelsea, respectively.

Both players could be in line to make their Arsenal debuts against Swansea on Saturday, along with Andre Santos, Per Mertesacker and Park Chu-Young.
