Arsenal transfer round-up: Gunners eyeing ex academy star, Torres latest

Published on: 25 November 2020

It was clear in the performance produced in the 0-0 draw against Leeds United on Sunday that Arsenal under Mikel Arteta remain a work in progress.

The Gunners have won just four of their opening nine Premier League fixtures this season and have scored just once in their last five outings.

This has led to suggestions the North London club could enter the transfer market again in January to solve some of their problems.

A new creative midfielder has been mentioned as a potential solution, while questions remain over a number of squad figures.

Here are some of today’s most noteworthy Arsenal transfer stories.

Villarreal will only sell star if release clause is met

Arsenal remain interested in Spanish international defender Pau Torres, but Villarreal will only sell the player if his €50million release clause is activated.

Torres has become a regular for Spain under Luis Enrique, with recent reports from the country claiming Real Madrid ’s interest in the centre back is building as they view the 23-year-old as the long-term successor to Sergio Ramos (as per El Periodic Meditteraneo via Sport Witness ).

Barcelona and Mikel Arteta’s team have been credited with an interest in the player in the past, but Villarreal have made clear they will only sell Torres for €50m.

This fee would have to be paid in one go, due to rules over release clauses in La Liga, making Torres an expensive option. Arsenal have done this before, though, most recently with the signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal eye on former academy player

Arsenal are among a number of clubs taking a close look at Valencia’s Yunus Musah, with the teenager making a first-team breakthrough in La Liga this season.

Musah was on the Gunners’ books as an academy player, but left North London in 2019 to sign for Valencia, where he has enjoyed a rise to prominence, becoming the Spanish club’s youngest ever goalscorer earlier this month.

According to 90min, Arsenal scouts have continued to watch the American youth international since his exit from the club. It’s possible the Gunners could make a move to re-sign the player.

Everton, Leeds United and Wolves are also believed to be monitoring the 17-year-old, with the midfielder thought to be open to the idea of returning to the Premier League at some point in the future.
