Asamoah Gyan axed from Ghana line-up against Mali, Jordan leads attack

Published on: 11 February 2012

Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has been left out of the Black Stars starting line-up in the third-place play-off against Mali at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.

Youngster Jordan Ayew will start as the Black Stars lead striker in the game to be played in Equatorial Guinea.

Midfielder Mohammed Abu gets his first for Ghana in Africa’s flagship tournament as he replaces suspended Derek Boateng and injured Emmanuel Agyemang Badu.

Abu partners Anthony Annan in midfield as coach Goran Stevanovic makes four changes to the team that started the previous game.

Gyan looks not to have recovered from the shock defeat to Zambia which seems to have led to the decision to put him on the bench.

In the absence of first choice defenders John Mensah and John Boye, Isaac Vorsah and Jonathan Mensah will play at the heart of the defence.

John Pantsil returns to the starting line-up while Samuel Inkoom plays on the right wing.

Andre Ayew will be used as the left winger while Kwadwo Asamoah will play just behind Jordan. Kick-off is at 8:00pm local time (19:00GMT). Starting line-up Adam Kwarasey, John Paintsil, Lee Addy, Jonathan Mensah, Isaac Vorsah, Anthony Annan, Samuel Inkoom, Mohammed Abu, Jordan Ayew, Kwadwo Asamoah, Andre Ayew

Subs: Daniel Adjei, Daniel Opare, John Mensah, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Masahudu Alhassan, Sulley Muntari, Charles Takyi, Prince Tagoe, Asamoah Gyan, Ernest Sowah

Suspended: Derek Boateng and John Boye
