Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan will not defend his BBC African Player of the Year crown after he was left out of the shortlist for the 2011 edition.

The Ivorian pair of Yaya Toure and Gervinho as well as Andre 'Dede' Ayew of Ghana, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o andMali's Seydou Keita made the shortlist.

The shortlist was determined by a panel of experts acrossAfricawho took into consideration individual skill, technical ability, teamwork, consistency, impact on results and fair play.

Despite this setback the Al Ain player is among the players selected for Caf’s 2011 African Footballer of the Year where he picked the second place last year.

The Black Stars striker clinched the title with an overwhelming majority - receiving more than half of the vote.

He finished well ahead of fellow Ghanaian Andre 'Dede' Ayew, Ivorians Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o ofCameroon.
