Asante Kotoko hand leaders Medeama first defeat

Champions Asante Kotoko handed Medeama their first defeat of the season, thanks to Kofi Nti Boakye's first half header.

Boakye powered home the only goal of the match from a Richard Mpong free kick in the 45th minute to give the Porcupine Warriors their second straight win.

It came as Michael Anaba broke down the right, portentously beating two markers and was brought down, close to the edge of the penalty box.

Former Meadeam winger Mpong elected himself for the free-kick, hit the ball and disastrously fell to Nti Boakye who headed home from close range for the only goal of the match.

The home side resumed the second half determined to get the equalizer but a strong defensive display from Kotoko thwarted the effort of their attackers.

The attacking machinery of Tanko Mohammed and Larbi Koomson were easily dealt with by the defenders of Kotoko

A fabulous diagonal pass from Larbi Koomson, with whom he is forming an instinctive understanding, found Koomson in space and his shot slapped against the Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Soulama Abdulai in the 25th minute.

Medeama piled the pressure on the visitors for the equalizer but their efforts went in vain.

The Mauve and Yellows had gone five matches without defeat and it had to take Kotoko to inflict the painful 1-0 defeat.

But Medeama will still remain at the top of the table with a one point difference.
