Asante Kotoko title dreams still alive – Spox says new coach will chase the double

Despite recent turbulence, Asante Kotoko remains unwavering in their ambition to clinch both the Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup this season.

According to the club's spokesperson, Samuel Sarfo Duku Esq., the mandate for the incoming head coach is crystal clear: win the double.

This bold declaration follows the official parting of ways between the 24-time league champions and their now-former head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, whose tenure ended after a dip in form saw Kotoko fall from the league summit to fourth place.

“We will continue to do our utmost to win the double, as promised,” Duku said during an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

“As I speak to you now, we are still on pace, even though it has become a bit difficult, especially with the league title, considering the fact that we had been in the lead for weeks… but for us to lose the first spot today with a 6-point margin.”

Kotoko, who are currently six points adrift of league leaders Bibiani Goldstars, still have a shot at salvaging their season.

The FA Cup remains very much in sight, with a semi-final clash against Berekum Chelsea scheduled for later this month.

The Porcupine Warriors are eyeing their first FA Cup triumph since 2017.

“It appears to be a challenging task, but given the points at stake, we may be able to reclaim the virtually lost crown,” Duku added.

“This is Kotoko, and Kotoko goes into every competition as the favorite… the goal of winning the double is still on the table for whoever takes charge.”

All signs point to former Kotoko player and coach Abdul Karim Zito being unveiled soon as Ogum’s replacement.

Zito, a revered figure in Kotoko folklore, was part of the legendary squad that lifted the CAF Champions League in 1983.

His return could spark a turnaround in form and revive hopes of a historic double.
