Asante Kotoko have announced a night vigil to honor Francis Yaw Frimpong, a devoted supporter fatally stabbed during a Ghana Premier League match a week ago.
The event, organized jointly by the club’s management and fan leadership, will take place on February 9, 2025, at Kumasi’s Baba Yara Sports Stadium, aiming to commemorate Frimpongâpopularly known as Nana Pooleyâand amplify demands for justice and improved safety at football venues.
Frimpong was tragically killed during Kotoko’s away fixture against Nsoatreman FC at Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre on Matchday 19.
The attack, carried out by unidentified assailants, sparked national outrage and renewed calls to address violence and lax security at sporting events.
In a social media statement, the club urged supporters, football enthusiasts, and the broader public to attend the vigil, requesting attendees to bring candles as a symbol of solidarity.
"The management of Asante Kotoko SC and the leadership of it’s supporters are calling on the various supporter groups, football enthusiasts and the public to join in observing a night of vigil in solidarity with our departed brother, Francis Yaw Frimpong (POOLEY), as we continue to demand justice and fight for sanity in our football.

The ceremony is expected to draw thousands, reflecting both grief over Frimpong’s death and growing public frustration over systemic failures in safeguarding fans.
