AshantiGold defeat Hearts to lift SWAG Cup

Obuasi Ashantigold beat Accra Hearts of Oak 3-2 on penalties to lift the 2010 edition of the SWAG/SIC H.P. Nyemitei Cup on Sunday at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.

The match had to be decided via penalties after a barren score line after normal time to keep the tie 0-0 from two leg aggregate and for Ashgold to emerge superior when their captain Daniel Asamoah netted the crucial kick.

The result served as a sweet revenge for the Miners, who had suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of the Phobians during the annual Top Four competition, but Hearts had themselves to blame for allowing the title to slip through their fingers.

Hearts were just a kick away from glory after goalie Sammy Adjei saved twice but their 'danger man' Edwin Osei 'Pele' blew wide to the dismay of the crowd who ere poised and in set for a partying mood.

Prior to the Hearts final miss, Owusu Sefa and Yufa Zugah had both blasted wide to give Ashgold some breather.

Keeper Adjei proved his wealth of experience with two saves of Ashgold duo, Henry Entsir and Frederick Quayson, thus forcing many to believe that the shot-stopper has a lot to offer this season.

Adjei, who appeared demoralized by Osei's effort was however clearly beaten with the final kick by Asamoah, whilst Wilson Andoh has his effort saved by Ashgold goalie Isaac Akrong.

Being the fourth clash between the two sides in less than a month, expectations were high for the Phobians following their performance in the Top Four whilst Ashgold had their eyes gazed on revenge to appease their fans.

Whilst Hearts started brightly, the second half was dominated by the Miners, however, both teams failed to make the most of the chances that came their way.

The best chance of the game fell to Ashgold two minutes from time, but Samson Cudjoe blasted wide after Adjei had spilled Edmund Owusu Peprah's piler from a free-kick.

Cudjoe, Mohammed Yakubu and Asamoah scored for Ashgold whilst Tetteh Nortey and Uriah Asante scored for Hearts.

It was the first victory for Ashgold since 2006 in the annual competition organised by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) in honour of Henry P. Nyemitei, former Sports Administrator and Chairman of the now SIC Insurance Company Limited.
