Ashgold defender Eric Donkor not surprised by season cancellation

Ashanti Gold defender Eric Donkor says the decision to cancel the football season because of coronavirus pandemic came as no surprise to him.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) cancelled the top-flight league and other competitions following a lengthy Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

According to him, he expected the season to be cancelled because it was clear that the government were not interested in easing coronavirus restrictions for football to resume.

“When you listen carefully to the president, Nana Akuffo-Addo you could see clearly that football is not going to resume anytime soon. So I wasn’t surprised when GFA cancelled the season," he said on Bryt FM.

Following the resumption of leagues in Europe under strict restrictions, there were calls for the football season to resume before the GFA took the final decision to abrogate the league.

“We should ask ourselves if we can emulate the Europeans who have restart their season. Can we go by their measure in Ghana, these are some of the questions we should ask ourselves. So I think it cancelling the season is in the right direction because human lives matter” he concluded.

Ashgold and Asante Kotoko have been selected as Ghana's rep for CAF inter-club competitions next season.
