Aston Villa are planning a swoop for Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan, according to reports in the English media.

The 26-year-old has been completely frozen out at Schalke and has so far not been involved in the team’s pre-season friendly games.

Villa boss Paul Lambert is understood to be a big admirer of the defensive midfielder and is interested in bringing him to the Premiership.

Annan is deemed surplus to requirement at the German club and was farmed out on loan to Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem last term where he made 21 first team appearances.

The former Hearts of Oak player is himself looking to leave The Royal Blues to revive his dwindling club career which will enhance his chances with the ever competitive Ghana national team, the Black Stars.

Lambert is said to have received assurances from chairman Randy Lerner and therefore will be able to meet Annan’s asking price reportedly worth in the region of US$ 4m.

Belgian side Anderlecht and Vitesse Arnhem where Annan was on loan last season are also interested.
