Atletico Madrid 'linked with summer move for Lyon star Bruno Guimaraes'

Atletico Madrid could finally bring Bruno Guimaraes to the Spanish capital this summer as they line up a move for the Lyon midfielder.

Guimaraes has impressed in Ligue 1 this season having joined the French club in the winter of 2020.

He joined after Atletico were threatened with legal action, along with his then club Athletico Paranaense, by Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas over an agreement between the two sides that saw the Spanish club given first refusal on the player, following the transfer of one of his team-mates to Atleti.

Guimaraes ultimately ended up in France, securing an initial loan move before moving on a permanent basis last summer.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Diego Simeone has not given up hope of finally securing his man.

Lyon agreed a deal with Paranaense in 2020 for the 23-year-old, reported to be a fee of €25million with a 20 per cent sell-on fee added.

However, reports at the time suggested Atleti had a stipulation in a previous agreement with the Brazilian club, allowing them first refusal, and to match any bid made for the central midfielder.

That previous agreement was formed following the transfer of Renan Lodi - one of two players to move from the South American club to Atletico since a working link was established between the clubs.

Mundo Deportivo suggest that financial restraints stopped the Spanish club from fully pursuing the striker last summer.

But they could be willing to return this year with a similar bid, with French clubs currently feeling the pinch following the collapse of their domestic media rights deal.
