Atletico Madrid planning to recall Caio Henrique ahead of next season

Published on: 29 May 2020

Given the current financial climate, it's difficult to see big-money transfers happening this summer.

Atletico Madrid are already preparing for next season and are looking at reinforcements that they can realistically bring in.

One of those is Caio Henrique, who they will call back early from his loan at Gremio in Brazil.

The 22-year-old's loan isn't due to expire until the end of 2020, but Atletico have a clause that allows them to terminate that deal early.

Los Rojiblancos signed Caio from Santos in 2016 and he has a contract at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano until 2023.

Having joined Atletico as a midfielder, he has also shown he can play at left-back during loans at Fluminense and now Gremio, as well as with the Brazilian under-23 national team.

That means Caio would slot in nicely as a back-up for Renan Lodi in Diego Simeone's squad, which currently lacks another left-back.

Nehuen Perez could also return to Atletico ahead of next season after impressing on loan at Famalicao in Portugal this campaign.

However, the Argentine would take up another non-EU spot in the Atletico squad, with all three of their allocated places already filled by Felipe, Lodi and Santiago Arias.

As for new signings, Atletico will have to rely on selling players like Thomas Lemar to generate the funds to bring in new arrivals.

They are already obliged to pay 55 million euros to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea after his loan expires at the end of this season.
