Atletico Madrid resist pressure from Real Madrid and Barcelona

Published on: 26 January 2021

Atletico Madrid are enjoying a fantastic 2020/21 season to this point, sitting atop the LaLiga Santander standings, and they are continuing to resist pressure from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Los Colchoneros have the chance to end the first half of the campaign on 50 points, a total that would put them on a mathematical collision course with a club record 100 points.

Despite Real Madrid and Barcelona picking up more points of late, bringing to an end their respective wretched domestic runs, Los Colchoneros have been equally as good.

Neither Barcelona nor Los Merengues have lost in nine league matches, but Atleti have been able to find the perfect answer at every turn.

Against Valencia, in fact, Simeone's team added their seventh victory in a row, even though the match was a struggle for them.

They had Luis Suarez to thank for his heroics, although the team's defeat to Real Madrid earlier in the season had been a moment for concern.

It left doubts within Atleti walls, but they were able to bounce back, and they have built a seven and 10 point lead over Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.
