Atletico Madrid's thousand faces

Published on: 25 January 2021

Atletico Madrid showed their variety of strengths on Sunday evening, as they came from behind to beat Valencia.

Just how strong they are was seen no more clearly than with Luis Suarez's goal, the events leading up to which could be presented as a story themselves.

It all started with Renan Lodi being fouled deep inside is own area, and Jan Oblak taking a straightforward and routine freekick.

Mario Hermoso took the ball to play out from the back, and Thomas Lemas and Koke showed for the ball. Atleti played three passes, still sitting deep. Koke moved the ball towards Jose Gimenez, who usually would have cleared the ball far from his area to avoid taking a risk.

But it went to Stefan Savic, and Atletico moved forward. Yannick Carrasco was involved, but eventually the ball ended up with Joao Felix, via a fine ball from Hermoso, who then assisted Luis Suarez's goal.

It could be anecdotal and nothing more, but the goal that put Atletico Madrid ahead shows what they can do this season. They're capable of playing in a number of ways and winning.

A change of style can't really be discussed, as 2020/21 has required all facets of the game to be carried out with near perfection.

They can play if they have to, or they can go long if that's what's needed.

But, whatever they do, 47 points in 18 games show how good they've been.
