Video: Ballack considers legal action against Boateng

Published on: 18 May 2010

A lawyer for Chelsea star Michael Ballack said he intends lodging a complaint against Portsmouth's Kevin-Prince Boateng for the "intentional" tackle which ended the Germany captain's World Cup hopes.

Ballack was ruled out of the 2010 World Cup finals Monday after a scan revealed torn ligaments in his ankle following a heavy tackle by Germany-born Ghanaian Boateng during Sunday's FA Cup final win.

The 33-year-old German will be sidelined for eight weeks, thus ending his hopes of playing what was likely to have been his last World Cup campaign in South Africa.

Ironically, Ghana are in Germany's Group D at the World Cup.

For the German's lawyer, Michael Becker, Boateng set out to injure Ballack intentionally.

"To me, what Boateng did was not simply an insidious tackle but was designed to intentionally injure," Becker said.

"We are now looking into all of our legal options, which could lead to both civil and penal consequences."

Ballack's injury and subsequent absence from the June 11-July 11 finals caused uproar in Germany, although Boateng said Monday he did not set out to injure Ballack.

"I was late and I tackled him head on, it was really stupid. I apologised to him twice on the pitch, and now this makes it three times," he said.

"I am really sorry, but there was no ill-intention meant."

Ballack meanwhile indicated he wanted to forget the whole incident.

Speaking from his team's training camp in Sicily, to which he travelled despite his injury, Ballack said: "Obviously I'm still very angry and disappointed, but there's no point in going out to make things worse."

Ballack is simply taking things too far.Though it hurts to have fallen out at this period when the world cup is near, such is football. It could have been the reverse. He should take it lightly n forge ahead n inspire his team to the world cup final.

isnt this funny, since when did prayers start going to court for tackles suffered on the football pitch. for how long will whites continue to disrespect us. This is a guy (Boateng) who whole heartedly fought and defended the German flag when he was 17. its rather unfortunate the whole Germany is against him now he's decided to serve Mama Africa. We are behind you for u've made the best decision.

It's very painful. I have always been a fan of Ballack and I feel bad that he's not going to the world cup. I know Ghana will beat them with or without Ballack but I didn't want them to have any excuse. Regarding the tackle, I'm very sure it wasn't deliberate. As for the lawyer treating a legal action, he can kiss my black ass because he gonna loose

weather serious or not serious injery, ballack should accept it. it is all about football and this tackle can happen to any player and it has happen to ballack. if balack can not accept apology then it his own palama....to the lawyer i think he should go and sleep well before he come and make any comment concerning kevin boateng and ballack because what he is saying thus not make any since......

i'm a chelsea boy but this is straight out bullocks. If every player that was tackled and hurt pursued legal action would he ballack have self respect to still be on the pitch?

it really sucks to hear that, but i think it was not deliberate as the lawyer has been claiming, though it's quite severe and its going to be a big blow to the germans

I SUPPORT BALLACK TO EMBARK UPON LEGAL ACTION; NOT IN REGULAR LAW COURT BUT FOOTBALL COURT OF ARBITRATION. THIS ACTION WILL SERVE AS A WARNING TO THOSE DANGEROUS TACKLERS. IF IT'S NOT CHECK, FEW FOOTBALLERS WILL BE AROUND NOWADAYS. TOO MUCH DANGEROUS TACKLING AND FIFA WILL BE VERY STRICT THIS SA2010. I'M SUPPORTING BOATENG B'COS HE'LL PLAY FOR GHANA. I'M BEING FAIR OBJECTIVELY. IT'S EASY TO SAY I'M SORRY, BUT IT WON'T STOP ENDING SOMEONE'S CAREER. BALLACK MUST TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST KELVIN BOATENG.

This is downright silly! If legal action is the way to go then the game of football cannot be played anymore. And then Ballack should have been sued many times over till this point as he always plays rough and dirty.

This is stupid suggestion, why don't you just ask FIFA to replace referees with Lawyers and Judges? And set up a law court somewhere in the stadium.

Judging from the way this whole thing played out, it makes me think that ballack is truning to be the immature one in this fued. Granting the fact that it was a bad tackle, this was no way intended militously on KPB's terms. It was a championship game, with a trophy on the line, so, offcourse there is going a level competitiveness. This is the RISK of football. Once you step on the pitch, ANYTHING can happen. I wish him quick recovery, but, he is taking this too far.

i think people should just understand ballack and his frustration but for the law suit i don't think it should be taken serious....has ballack forgotten the number of times he has bullied other players on the pitch..he should just accept that he was not meant to be part of this soccer showpiece.....i hope other players will be more careful with their tackles

There is a saying in Ga which go like this; "who sees a broken tree branch and still sticks his eye in it???". If Ballack and his people are sure Prince intended hurting Hin(Ballack) why did he pull his leg away.In a game of football such things always happen. Just about a couple of weeks ago Ribery, who plays for Bayern Munich played such a foul, but because he olays for a german team , it was okay!!! The Germans have started finding excuses , in case they don't get far in the WM. Apart from that , it hurts them that Prince Kevin is not playing for them. They want to make him nervous so that he would not be selected to play against them.

I think balack need to go back and watch the videos of his tackles before even attempting to make such comments. The slavery errer is long over, cant he see?even America have chosen Obama over their full bloded whites to show we are all one, only colour differs.Balack should be reasonable and stop paiting Boateng as a bad person.

i do quite understand how Ballack is feeling now..Every player is looking up to feature in the up-coming world cup, but its unfortunate the German ace cannot feature coz of the injury. If Ballack wants to take legal action, henceforth there will be no tackling on the pitch..Essien, mikel, John and co should see their lawyers.

Ballack and his lawyers should ICJ in the Hague....This is absolute nonsense. This is football. Boateng was shown the yellow card, is a form of punishment. I will also urge Arsenal FC to formally sue Martin Taylor for what he did to Eduado. Isn't this funny?
