Barcelona and Umtiti agree contract extension

Published on: 11 January 2022

In the latest move to try and help their financial situation and register Ferran Torres, Barcelona have announced they have come to an agreement to extend the contract of Samuel Umtiti.

The French centre-half has barely been used by the club this season, but he was one of the higher earners at the Camp Nou, which made selling him rather difficult.

As pressure has grown on Los Cules to find a way to free up enough salary to register Torres, Umtiti has been given a contract that is due to run until June 2026, albeit on a significantly reduced salary.

This move comes after Philippe Coutinho was loaned to Aston Villa, with the English club playing a significant percentage of his mammoth salary, although this alone was not enough to legally register their new signing from Manchester City.

Umtiti's salary has been reduced by 10 percent, and the player is convinced that under Xavi Hernandez he can once again become an important player for the club.

"FC Barcelona publicly expresses its gratitude to Samuel Umtiti for the effort and affection he has shown towards the club," a Barcelona statement read.

"With this contract extension, Barcelona extends its 'fair play' and will be able to register Ferran Torres.

"The French defender has reduced part of the salary that he was going to receive in the year and a half that he had left on his contract, with this operation the club will not acquire any further higher financial commitment to the player."
