Barcelona coach Vilanova blasts Mourinho for playing Essien at left-back

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has lashed out at Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho for overlooking Real Madrid's youngsters to play Michael Essien at left-back.

Mourinho has come under intensed scrutiny for his preference of Michael Essien to Nacho Fernandez for the left-back slot.

But the former Chelsea boss has insisted the Spanish youngster is a center-back while maintaining Essien remains his best option.

However, Barcelona boss believes Mourinho is not brave enough to risk playing young and inexperienced in Madrid games.

"Controversy in Madrid about lack of academy players? I only know how we work and it's also a matter of courage to give them chances," he told reporters.

Essien reverted to his familiar holding midfield role in the 4-1 fourth round Copa del Rey win over Alcoyano.
