Barcelona pair Pedri & Jordi Alba suffer muscle injuries

Published on: 15 September 2021

Barcelona's problems have only deepened as a result of the 3-0 home defeat to Bayern on Tuesday, with both Pedri and Jordi Alba suffering muscle injuries in the humiliation at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana welcomed the return of Champions League football in Catalonia, but they were brushed aside with ease by an extremely competent and clinical Bayern side. And on top of the loss, Ronald Koeman faces even bigger issues in terms of personnel.

Barça have announced that they will be without the services of Pedri and Alba for their upcoming fixture against Granada, after the duo suffered muscle injuries over the course of the 90 minutes.

Pedri managed to complete the entire match against Bayern, but in doing so, the teenager caused an injury to his thigh, which will keep him out of Monday's clash with Granada. In fact, Barcelona gave no indication over an expected return date, stating that 'his recovery will dictate his return'.

The midfielder's injury comes as little surprise, after he made an outrageous 73 appearances for club and country throughout the 2020/21 campaign - his first season in elite level football.

Likewise, Alba, who also had to play through illness against Bayern as it was, is out of contention for the game against Granada, having been forced off the field of play with a hamstring issue. The 32-year-old underwent a series of tests on Wednesday morning which confirmed his diagnosis, and like Pedri, there is no indication of when he is likely to return.

Although there has been no official confirmation of the extent of their injuries, Javi Miguel of Diario AS reports that both players could be out for between three to four weeks.

This pair of injuries only adds to the ever-growing list awaiting Ronald Koeman, who now enters Monday's La Liga fixture without a senior full-back at his disposal. Midfielder Sergi Roberto filled in for the injured Sergino Dest against Bayern, while 18-year-old Alejandro Balde could replace Alba, having made his debut against Die Roten on Tuesday.

17-year-old midfielder Gavi, who also made his debut in the Champions League hammering, could earn more minutes on Monday, after he impressed during his brief cameo at Camp Nou.

Barcelona were no match for Bayern in their European curtain raiser, with the German champions rarely having to hit their full stride to clinch a comfortable 3-0 win, thanks to goals from Thomas Muller and a Robert Lewandowski brace.
