Barcelona to miss out on €52.7m if eliminated in Champions League group stage again

Published on: 05 October 2022

Being knocked out in the group stage of the Champions League for the second year running could have huge financial consequences for Barcelona.

The Catalan side have made an excellent start to the season on the domestic front, sitting top of La Liga with six wins and one draw from their opening seven matches.

Things haven't gone nearly as well in the Champions League though with Bayern Munich and Inter both beating them in their last two European outings.

As a result, they sit six points behind the former and three behind the latter at the halfway point of the group stage, and are likely to be knocked out if they don't beat Inter on home turf next week.

According to AS, such a fate could have huge financial repercussions for the club, costing them around €52.7m.

A report from the publication states that's how much the winner of the competition will earn in prize money, while clubs will be awarded just under €10m just for getting out of the group stage and another €10m for winning a single knockout tie.

Missing out on such funds would be a bigger blow for Barcelona than for most major European clubs given their fiscal situation.

They still have considerable financial difficulties and have put a lot of pressure on themselves to solve them having spent a huge amount in the summer.

They're also exploring ways to bring Lionel Messi back to Catalonia next year, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Doing so would undoubtedly cost the club a large amount of money, even if he joins on a free transfer, given the wages he'd be on. How they fare in the Champions League could have a big impact on whether he returns or not.
