Barzagli: Juventus contract extension can wait

Published on: 29 January 2016

Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli has brushed away questions about his future with the Bianconeri, saying that he just wants to concentrate on events on the pitch.

The 34-year-old Italian international’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and Barzagli has yet to sign an extension to his current deal.

“We will talk eventually, but right now I’m more focused on our season and on the group, my agents will sort out the extension,” Barzagli said in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

The former Wolfsburg defender was also asked about his thoughts on the Scudetto race, with Juventus just two points behind leaders Napoli.

“Right now we are playing really well,” he added.

“We’ve found a good defensive solidity, which is also helped by the work of the midfield and attack. Defensive solidity is so important and ultimately this is what has improved us.

“However, we’re still behind Napoli in the table and only consistency will see us draw level with them and maybe even go past them.

“It is not a two-horse race, though, Fiorentina and Inter are just behind us, we’ll see what happens. It’s not an easy race, it’s been very open and I think the games between the challengers will decide who wins.”

Finally, Barzagli was asked whether he would prefer Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain or Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in his team.

“They are both great players, very explosive, their records speak for themselves,” he said.

“Who would I prefer to be on my team? We have plenty of good strikers at Juventus.”
