Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona suffer huge drops in player value

Major clubs across the top leagues are set to be hit hard by the coronavirus - with potential transfer fees set to drop by 28 per cent if the crisis sees football sidelined until June and player contracts are not extended.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona are the big names that could be affected the most in player values, according to the CIES Football Observatory.

With football mostly wiped out by the disease across the globe and stars being forced to isolate at home until the situation improves, clubs are taking a big hit without matchday income, sponsorship deals and TV money.

Leagues are scrambling to find a suitable date to get action back underway amid pressure from broadcasting companies and concerns that clubs could soon be fighting for their futures due to the financial strain placed on them.

And the report claims that teams face further problems down the line if that doesn't happen, with the total value of players in the major five leagues dropping by almost 30 per cent from £29bn to £21bn. Manchester United would be dealt a huge blow by the drops, with Paul Pogba's value set to dip from £58m to £31m.

There is also the possibility that players could leave their clubs for free when their contracts expire on June 30, even if there are still matches to be played in the event that seasons continue through the year.

Barcelona face the biggest losses in potential future fees among the higher profile clubs. On March 11 their average player values were worth around £1.04bn, but it is set to drop by £330million to £715m by June 30.

Real Madrid would suffer the second biggest dip among the three clubs, with their overall player value slated to go from £978m to £667m, a loss of £311m. Meanwhile, Bayern's future transfer fees could be cut by £237m - from £719 to £482m.

In the Premier League, Manchester City are bracing for a £412m loss from £1.2bn to £844m, Liverpool will lose £315m, taking their values down to just over £1.2bn, and Manchester United are set to miss out on £261m - with their fees slashed to £636m.

It comes as Barcelona agreed a 70 per cent wage cut with its stars, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Co will accept reductions for the next four months as Juventus strives to make savings of £80m.
