Rennes winger Jeremy Doku is backing Vincent Kompany to return Anderlecht to the top of Belgian and European football.

The Purple and White are almost out of contention for the title this season as they lie fourth on the First Division A table with 55 points from 30 games, trailing leaders Union Saint-Gilloise by 12 points with four games to spare.

But Doku, who enjoyed a tremendous run of form at the club before swapping for French outfit Rennes, is backing coach Vincent Kompany to turn things around.

"It remains the team in my heart, hey. They get better every season and I am very happy about that. Vincent has a large part in that. We all felt at the time that his approach would lead to beautiful things. Anderlecht will return to the top, I have never worried about that," he told  HLN .

"It was fun and strange at the same time to play with him. A legend of Manchester City who gave me an assist at Anderlecht . Sometimes we argued about stupid things, but that should be possible.

"Vincent is very open to discussions. I I respect him immensely and was happy to see him again at the end of December when I came to kick off.”

Rennes paid the Belgium outfit 26 million Euros, surpassing the amount paid for Youri Tielemans by AS Monaco in 2017.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp was keen on the player and had sent scouts to watch the speedy and tricky youngster in the league matches in the Belgian top-flight.

However Rennes looks came up with the right amount to force the move for the talented youngster.

Doku signed a five year deal with the French side, which played in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The news of the winger's move came as shock to many following interest from English giants Liverpool and Manchester City.

Both clubs showed interest but failed to make an official bid, leaving the window open for Stade Rennais.

Doku is enjoyed an amazing season with the Purple and White, scoring twice and created four goals before departing the Lotto Park stadium

The Belgium born with Ghanaian heritage recently earned his national team call up, representing the European country in the UEFA Nations League.

Anderlecht were willing to keep their most priced asset but the offer was too good to reject.
