Bernard Lama's flipped interview: Ask me about Barcelona

Published on: 31 March 2020

This is the latest episode in a new series called 'MARCA: Stories We Never Told,' a collection of stories and anecdotes that, until now, were filed in our drawers for different reasons and are now seeing the light.

Luis Fernandez's Paris Saint-Germain were one of Europe's best teams when they were drawn to play Johan Cruyff's Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 1995.

After a match against Metz in the league, PSG goalkeeper Bernard Lama refused to answer questions from journalists and invited them to interview him after training two days later.

At PSG's training base, the French international didn't just answer questions from MARCA journalists as he asked them too.

He was incredibly interested about Barcelona and Spanish football and questioned his interviewers about very small details.

The following year, during Euro 1996, he returned to the subject.

"Ask me about Barcelona," he said, before revealing about the Catalan club had approached to sign him from PSG.

Cruyff's sacking just a few weeks before had harmed Lama's chances of moving to the Camp Nou, with Bobby Robson and Jose Mourinho refusing to bring in a new goalkeeper with Vitor Baia as their No.1

During any further meeting with Lama, he was remarkably open and friendly, happy to have made his name in Spanish football.
