Ghana U23 midfielder Abdul Fatawu Safiu scored for his side Vancouver Whitecaps FC despite their 3-2 defeat to Arizona United SC on Thursday.
Daniel Haber opened the scoring for Whitecaps in the 45 minute before Safiu increased the tally in the 54th minute.
But a determined Luke Rooney scored a brace to cancel the lead and restore parity for the Arizona side before Chris Cortez hit the winner in added time.
Despite the loss, Whitecaps FC 2 remain atop the Western Conference with a 10W-5L-6D record, while Arizona United SC improve to 6W-8L-6D.
Whitecaps will host their Cascadia rivals Seattle Sounders at the Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday, August 6.
