Black Satellites trio 'not ready for Black Stars call up', says Coach JE Sarpong

Veteran Ghanaian Football coach Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong says the three Black Satellites players invited to join the Black Stars for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers was a wrong call by the head coach.

The trio, Ibrahim Danlad of Asante Kotoko , Philemon Baffuor of Dreams FC who plays at right-back and the AFCON U-20 MVP Fatawu Issahaku were handed a late call up by Coach C.K Akonnor to train with the team on Tuesday.

The calls up has been met with several reactions from the fans as many believe these players are not ready yet for the senior national team.

Coach Sarpong in an interview said despite the Black Satellites winning the AFCON U-20 tournament in Mauritania the performance exhibited by the players in this current squad does not merit a call up to the senior team.

He juxtaposed the 2021 squad to that of the 2009 World Cup-winning squad that were drafted straight to the Black Stars right after the tournament saying the 2009 squad were much better with quality and experience.

“It’s too early to call these players to the Black Stars. Dede Ayew‘s group were more matured than these players. Yeah they did well at the tournament but I don’t think it’s the right time to call them", JE Sarpong said in an interview on Happy FM.

“For now it’s not right for them to go there. They should be promoted to the U-23 team, not the Black Stars”, he added.
