Black Stars in close contest against select side in Kuffour testimonial

The Black Stars were 6-5 victors over the Friends of Kuffour team in a historic testimonial game in honour of Samuel Osei-Kuffour on Friday.

The match whch was played at the Baba Yara Stadium saw iconic football legends who the ex Ghana international had played with or against line up against Ghana’s senior national team before the watchful eyes of Ghana’s immediate two ex President; Jerry Rawling and John Kuffour alongside the Asantehene Otumfour Osei-Tutu II.

The somewhat pedestrian game came to live in the 7th minute when Samuel Inkoom scored off a rebound from a Jordan Ayew shot but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Alain Guame in posts for the Friends of Kuffour was called into action three minutes later when he stretched to keep out a well placed shot by Jordan Ayew. The ex Ivorian international had to receive medical treatment for the classy save.

Guame was not given any rest at all as he was called into action again in the 12th minutes – this time saving Inkoom’s shot after being played through clean on goal by Derek Boateng.

The first real chance for the Frriends of Kuffour team came in the 15th minute but Yaw Preko failed to control his shot after being nicely set up by a neat back hill by George Weah who had made an impressive burst into the Black Stars penalty area.

Two minutes later, Samuel Inkoom had his second goal again ruled out for offside and the quickly taken resulting free kick earned Kuffour’s team a soft penalty after Isaac Vorsah was penalized for a little nudge on George Weah in the eighteen.

Captain Sammy Kuffour stepped up to impressively slot home the game’s opener amidst wild cheers and jubilation by the fans.

The lead however lasted just two minutes as Kuffour himself slid in a goal-bound shot by Andre Ayew to pull the game even in the 21st minutes.

Derek Boateng then made it two in the 26th minute after his well placed shot from 19-yards out beat the impressive Alain Guame.

Jordan Ayew then extended the lead further two minutes after being played through by Samuel Inkoom off a throw-out by goalkeeper Isaac Amoako.

The Friends of Kuffour team pulled one back before halftime through former Black Stars captain C.K Ackunor who capitalized on a defensive mishap to put his side back into the game.

They picked up from where they left off in the first as Laryea Kingston’s expertly taken free kick again even the scores just two minutes into the second half.

The goal however proved to be what stirred the hornets’ nest as the Black Stars went on the restore and extend their lead through Sulley Muntari and John Mensah in the 60th and 63rd minutes respectively.

Abdoulaye Traore got a goal back for the Friends of Kuffour side from the spot after Tanko Mohammed drew a foul from Daniel Addo in the 75th minute.

The ex Ivorian international scored his second in the dying minutes to set up a grand stand finish but the Black Stars held on for the famous victory.

Medals of honour were awarded to all the players after the game in appreciation for helping bring an illustrious career of the ex Bayern Munich defensive stalwart which spanned over a decade to an historic end.
