Ghana are likely to be without key player Christian Atsu when they play Sudan in a crucial World Cup qualifier on Sunday because of injury, GHANAsoccernet.com can exclusively reveal.

The Portugal-based player suffered an ankle sprain while playing for his club Porto in their 1-1 draw with Maritimo in the Portuguese top-flight on Sunday.

The 21-year-old was taken off in the 10th minute of the game after clashing with Maritimo’s Hyun-Jun Suk.

Porto doctors have told GHANAsoccernet.com, Ghana’s leading football news website, that Atsu suffered an ankle sprain.

The Black Stars player will be re-evaluated by the club’s doctors on Tuesday to find out the full extent of injury.

This means he is unlikely to travel to join the Ghana squad for the game in Kumasi.

Even if he is declared fit to play in the game in Kumasi, Atsu will arrive in the country by Wednesday night.

His absence is a setback for coach Kwesi Appiah but bring into sharp focus the wisdom in the Black Stars coach calling 24 players to camp.

Appiah was criticized in certain quarters for naming 24 players for the match against Sudan but the injury to Atsu will justifies his decision as it would be too late to call-up a replacement for the match according to FIFA rules.
