Bonera: Pioli was always present at AC Milan

Published on: 05 December 2020

AC Milan assistant coach Daniele Bonera has said that the squad remained in contact with senior coach Stefano Pioli while the 55-year-old was in isolation.

Pioli and his right-hand man Giacomo Murelli had tested positive for COVID-19 in November, forcing the inexperienced Bonera into taking charge of the team, but the former Rossoneri defender has welcomed the usage of video calls to keep in contact with the Diavolo tactician in the last few weeks.

“The coach told me on the Saturday over the phone, that day, unfortunately, he tested positive and practically fled from Milanello,” Bonera said to Radio 105.

“He told me, ‘Now it’s Giacomo and your turn.’ Then Giacomo also tested positive and I was really alone.

“The most important phase is that which concerns the preparation. Thanks to the club that provided the technological possibility to always be in contact with the coach.

“Pioli is a coach who likes to share, he wanted to understand what my reactions were, and those of the players. He was always present.”
